Alessandro de' Medici was the first Medici to rule Florence as a hereditary monarch. He was nicknamed "il Moro" ("the Moor") due to his dark complexion and it is believed that his mother, possibly a servant within the Medici household, was of African descent. In 1537, Alessandro was assassinated by a distant cousin.
